Making a splash
www.LiquidSculpture.com/
Ever had one of those photo moments where you capture something so beautiful you wish you could snap it again? Then you need the kind of drive that Martin Waugh has. His site hosts a collection of his very precise photography, and there's not a dud to be found. His schtick is photographing droplets of colored and noncolored liquid. The results are stunning. Be sure to check out the Milk and Cream section, which, for my eye, stands out above the rest.
Free love
www.OkCupid.com/
Ah, to be in love, but only with that special someone who understands your passions, hopes and dreams, of course. If you're single, you've got to admit that sorting out the wheat from the chaff is a bit of a chore. If you take the online route, it can get expensive pretty quickly. Here's an absolutely brilliant matchmaking site that's free. It's strung together by a couple of math nerds. If you're really into such things, the FAQs explain how the whole thing works.
Where in the world?
www.placeopedia.com/
Swear by it or at it, Wikipedia is a force to be reckoned with. And what could be better than marrying the thing with Google's mapping software? This well-done site seamlessly blends the best of both into one easy-to-use cartographic pleasure. If your nerdy-type chums are having a water cooler conversation about what they're calling Web-two-dot-oh, this is a prime example of such a thing.
Fighting fonts
www.EngageStudio.com/helvetica/
In a fight between Helvetica, that most European of sans serif typefaces, and Arial, America's Mr. Everywhere, who do you think would win? This kitschy game will delight type nerds and designers of both Web and print. And, for the record, Arial stinks.
Speed test
www.SpeakEasy.net/speedtest/
The more you learn about the Internet, the more you're surprised it works at all. Slow is such a subjective topic when used in this context. The next time you're curious about how fast your bits are moving, consider this page. There are a slew of speed test sites out there, but this one is my favorite. It's both functional and quite pretty. A little usability goes a long way to explain a technical topic.
