Northcliffe and Lamson crossing to partly close

SPRING HILL - The west side of the intersection of Northcliffe Boulevard and Lamson Avenue will be closed today for improvements.

The intersection will be closed to all through traffic. Only residential and emergency vehicle traffic will be maintained. For information, call Hernando County Engineering Division at 754-4062.

Dance show to help United Way effort

SPRING HILL - A benefit for the United Way to help displaced hurricane victims staying in Hernando County will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Springstead Theatre on Mariner Boulevard.

The event will feature talent from several local dance studios, including DiAna's Dance Express, Erin's Danceworks, Serena's Dance Palace and Suncoast School of the Arts. The show is sponsored by the Springstead High School chorus and organized by Bright Beginnings Preschool.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at any of the participating dance studios, as well as by calling Bright Beginnings at 592-8087.

Brooksville seeks volunteers for boards

BROOKSVILLE - The Brooksville City Council is accepting applications from those interested in serving on the following volunteer boards:

--Parks and Recreation Advisory Board: One position for a term of office through Aug. 31, 2007.

--Police Officers' Pension Trust Fund Board of Trustees: One position with a term through Aug. 31, 2007, and another term through Oct. 31, 2007. Applicants must be city residents.

--Firefighters' Pension Trust Fund Board of Trustees: One position for a term through Oct. 31, 2007. Applicants must be city residents.

To apply, application forms must be completed. Forms are available in the city clerk's office at Brooksville City Hall, 201 Howell Ave. Completed applications must be returned to the office no later than 5 p.m. Friday.

All applicants must be registered voters in Florida. For information, call 544-5407.

Eagles order to support charities with yard sale

WEEKI WACHEE - A yard sale fundraiser will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 8263 Cortez Blvd.

Christ the Savior church offers 2-day garage sale

BROOKSVILLE - Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church will have its annual charitable garage sale Thursday through Saturday on the church grounds, 13460 Olympic Village Drive, off Sunshine Grove Road. The sale will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Learn about car seat safety at resource center

BROOKSVILLE - A Woman's Resource Center will host a car seat safety class at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 134 E Fort Dade Ave.

The program will include discussion on what Florida law says about car seats, the correct installation of infant/toddler and booster seats, the best place in the car for children, and techniques to get children to participate in seat belt safety.

Hospitals to present community health fair

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando Community Health Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Brooksville Elks Lodge, 14494 Cortez Blvd.

The event will include a variety of health screenings and information on some of the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases and conditions. Flu shots will be available for $25 (Medicare and other insurance will be accepted). Area restaurants will provide complimentary food and refreshments. There will be music and entertainment.

Sponsors include Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill Regional and Brooksville Regional hospitals, Hernando County Health Department, Florida Cancer Institute, Hernando Gastroenterology Associates, Brooksville Cardiology, Summit Imaging, Hernando Today and WWJB Radio.

Cracker cattle tour first of Withlacoochee hikes

Friends of the Withlacoochee State Forest and Withlacoochee Forestry Visitor Center will host the first hike of its fall hike series from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 19. It will be a Cracker cattle tour, meeting at 8132 Croom Rital Road, east of Brooksville.

The tour will include a guided narration. The cattle have a documented heritage that dates back to the original colonists of this area.

This five-hike series allows participants an opportunity to see areas of the Withlacoochee State Forest that are not normally open to the public. The cost is $5 per hike or $20 for all five. Those who pay for all hikes will be entitled to a year's membership in the local Friends of the Withlacoochee State Forest chapter.

Additional hikes include:

--Full Moon Tour, 8 p.m. Nov. 16. Meet at the main gate at McKethan Lake.

--Caving and Wildflowers, 10 a.m. Nov. 30. Meet at the trailhead for Dames Cave on County Road 491 in Citrus County.

--Bird Watchers, 10 a.m. Dec. 14. Meet at the McKethan Lake trailhead.

--Longleaf Pine and Naval Stores, 10 a.m. Jan 18. Meet at the Holder Mine campground pavilion in Citrus County.

Applications taken for board positions

The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from those wishing to volunteer on the following boards:

--Aviation Authority: One position available.

--Board of Construction and Regulation: One position for an architect/engineer representative available.

--Business Advisory Council: Three positions available for one retail business representative, one education representative and one manufacturing representative.

--Citizen Ordinance Advisory Team: Six positions available.

--Elder Affairs Council: Three positions available for one skilled nursing/respite representative, one merchant/business representative and one representative of District 1.

--Enterprise Zone Development Area Advisory Board: Two positions available for one nonprofit representative and one Chamber of Commerce representative.

--Personnel Advisory Board: Two positions available for one employee representative and one lay person.

--Planning and Zoning Commission: Two positions available.

--Port Authority: One position available.

--Tourist Development Council: Two positions available. The first is for a tourism enterprise representative (collecting the tourism tax); the second is for someone not involved in tourism.

All positions are volunteer and nonpaid. Terms start Jan. 1.

Applications are available in the county administrator's office in Room 460 of the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. Completed applications must be returned to the office no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 14.

St. Anthony council to mount Octoberfest event

BROOKSVILLE - St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women will host an Octoberfest dinner at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Heffernan Hall at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Blvd.

There will be German music and dancing. Dinner will include German sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and carrots. Tickets are $7.

This will be a family event; no alcohol will be served. For tickets or information, call the church at 796-2096 or Diana at 592-6975.

Parks department invites young people to First Tee

BROOKSVILLE - The city of Brooksville Parks and Recreation Department will offer PGA golf instructions through its First Tee of Brooksville program. The session will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 18-Nov. 22, at the Quarry Golf Course, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., off Broad Street.

The program is open to all area youth. The cost is $25 for active First Tee participants and $50 for all others. Registration is required by Oct. 14.

Youth ages 7 to 17 may join the First Tee of Brooksville for an annual activity fee of $35. Scholarships are available. The annual fee allows members to use the golf course practice areas and enters them into the First Tee Life Skills curriculum. Members begin at the par level and work toward attaining eagle level.
