Seafood festival to offer crafts, music and food

HERNANDO BEACH - The 22nd annual Hernando Beach Yacht Club Seafood Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the club, 4163 Shoal Line Blvd.
Admission is free; there is a $2 parking fee. There will be craft and food booths, and the Dixie Highway Band will provide music.

Kick up heels, ballroom style, with professionals
HERNANDO BEACH - The Hernando Beach Club will offer ballroom dancing lessons at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Oct. 14 at the club, 3145 Flamingo Blvd. The lounge will open at 7 p.m.
Lessons will be given by professional dance instructors Bonnie and Chris Jordon. The cost is $2 per lesson.

Library to offer free story time for youngsters
SPRING HILL - The Hernando County Public Library will offer its preschool story time at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Little Red Schoolhouse Branch Library, 1208 Kenlake Ave.
The free program is geared toward children ages 3 to 5 and will include stories, finger plays, crafts and songs.
There is no registration required, but seating is limited and early arrival is recommended. For information, call 540-6391.
Meeting to host speaker from health council
NEW PORT RICHEY - The needs assessment subcommittee of the Hernando County Health Care Advisory Board will host a conference at 11 a.m. Monday with Jeff Feller of the North Central Florida Health Planning Council. It will be at the Harbor Behavioral Center, 7809 Massachusetts Ave.

Vendor spaces open for VFW flea market
SPRING HILL - Vendor spaces are still available for the annual flea market Saturday hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 Ladies Auxiliary. The event will be at the post, 15166 Spring Hill Drive. Doors will open at 8 a.m.
Table rentals are $10 for one or $15 for two. The auxiliary will be selling homemade baked goods. Also, doughnuts and coffee will be available in the morning and hot dogs and sodas in the afternoon.
Those wishing to donate household items for the sale may drop them off at the canteen (no clothing).

Extension service offers marriage readiness class
BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will conduct a marriage preparation class from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24-25 at the extension office, 19490 Oliver St.
The class fulfills the requirements of the Florida Marriage Preparation and Preservation Act. A $32.50 discount on a marriage license is given to couples who complete the course. Also, the waiting period required when applying for a license is waived. The extension's class is approved by the courts in Hernando, Citrus and Pasco counties.
Couples must attend both evening sessions to receive a certificate of completion. The cost is $10 per couple. Registration is required by Oct. 17.

Flammer Ford to award Mustang for good grades
SPRING HILL - As an incentive to attain higher grades, Flammer Ford of Spring Hill will award a 2006 Ford Mustang, through a drawing, to a local high school student.
The contest is open to all high school juniors and seniors in Hernando County. Two entry forms will be given for every A grade and one for every B during the first three marking periods of the school year. Perfect attendance also gets two entry forms.
The forms will be put in a hopper, and at the end of the third marking period, 15 finalists will be drawn. One of the 15 will win the car.
Students must visit the dealership on Commercial Way to present their report cards and fill out the entry forms. Winners must be present to win and will be responsible for any taxes, title and registration fees, and the license plate. For information, call 686-8255.
Halloween festival offers games, hayrides
BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Recreation Department will host its 16th annual Halloween Harvest Festival from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 28-29 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.
The event will include games, face painting, a moonwalk, hayrides and a haunted house.
A pet masquerade will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 28. On-site registration will begin at 7:30 p.m. Preregistration can be completed by calling the Recreation Department at 754-4031.
A costume contest will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 29, with on-site registration beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is free. Game tickets will be sold for $1 for four tickets; entry to the haunted house will be $2. Food will also be available for purchase.
Church's fall festival to feature classic cars
SPRING HILL - Calvary Church of the Nazarene will host its annual fall festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 at the church, 235 Cobblestone Drive.
This is a family event that will include a classic car show, a firehouse presentation, a prayer walk experience, child safety information, music, food and games, including a dunk tank and moonwalk.

Ukrainian church to host annual fall picnic Oct. 23
SPRING HILL - The annual fall picnic at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church will be at noon Oct. 23. The church is at 8064 Weeping Willow St., off Cortez Boulevard west of Mariner Boulevard.
There will be live music with Jeanne. The menu will include fresh kubasa, hot dogs, pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kapusta, salads, desserts and coffee.
Tickets are $12. Make reservations by calling Alyce Clark at 688-1839. Tickets can also be purchased at the church from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays.
County seeks residents turning 100 or older in '06
Hernando County residents who will be celebrating their 100th birthday (or older) during 2006 are being sought by the county Health and Human Services Department. They will be honored at the third annual Centenarian Birthday Recognition Party on Jan. 10 at SunTrust Bank/Nature Coast in downtown Brooksville.
Anyone wishing to include someone in the celebration should call 540-4338 as soon as possible for an application. Completed applications must be returned to the department by Nov. 1.
Centenarian honorees will receive personal congratulatory letters and proclamations from federal and state officials, as well as proclamations from Brooksville and the Hernando County Commission. The event will be videotaped by Hernando County Government Broadcasting and will be aired on Bright House Networks cable Channel 19.
