  • For their own good

Music for the Young at heart

Published October 6, 2005

A harvest moon will shine brightly over Skipper's Smokehouse on Saturday as 24 bay area bands and artists take part in the latest of WMNF-FM 88.5's ongoing series of tribute concerts, "Rockin' in the Free World: A Tribute to Neil Young." It's a benefit for the community radio station and the Bay Area Arts & Music Organization, a collective that promotes local musicians. After a 2 p.m. art show and Neil Young memorabilia sale, artists such as Squirrels Gone Wild, Life of Pi, Sparky's Nightmare, the Vodkanauts and Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets will play more than 70 Young songs, from his days with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to his later role as a hero to grunge bands, including Pearl Jam. A highlight will be a 7:30 p.m. live recreation of Young's 1970 album After the Gold Rush, which featured the tracks Southern Man and Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Music starts at 3 p.m. at Skipper's, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $12 advance, $15 day of show. (813) 977-6474.
