Notebook: Downtown YMCA to host 10th annual Art Auction

DOWNTOWN - The Downtown YMCA Wellness Center hosts its 10th annual Art Auction on Oct. 14 at the Hyatt Regency Tampa, 211 N Tampa St.

The evening includes a live auction of works by local artists, a silent auction and dinner. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the live auction begins at 8 p.m.

Purchase advance tickets for $75 by calling 229-1305. Tickets will not be available at the door. Proceeds benefit Y Girls Rule, a part of the Ophelia Project.

Earth summit to feature concert, presentations

TAMPA - Visit the fifth annual Earth Charter Community Summit and Earth Scouts Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus, 4001 W Tampa Bay Blvd.

Activities will include a performance by the Earth Beat Choir and presentations such as "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community" and "Hardwired to Connect: Liberals and Conservatives on the Same Page."

Dragon boat races event to raise sport's awareness

CHANNEL DISTRICT - The Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races will host a free event to raise awareness of the sport from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on board the Lady Tampa Bay Yacht docked at the Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina, 700 S Florida Ave.

Guests can get information about sponsorship opportunities for the annual races, sign up to volunteer or join the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club. Singha Beer will provide drinks, and Yacht StarShip will provide appetizers.

Workshop open to teens in tech, career programs

TAMPA - High school juniors and seniors enrolled in technical and career programs are invited to attend a workshop on higher education from 9:30 a.m. to noon today at Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus, 4001 W Tampa Bay Blvd.

UT dance director named mayor's artist of the year

TAMPA - Susan Taylor Lennon, a Tampa dancer and educator, was awarded the Mayor's Artist of the Year Award.

Lennon directs the dance program at the University of Tampa and is an accomplished performer, choreographer and storyteller. Lennon is best known for her work with the Tampa Ballet, the Whose Move Dance-Mime-Theatre Troupe, the Dance Project and Susan Taylor & Company.

She is a graduate of Robinson High School and earned a master's degree in dance from Florida State University. She works with elderly and mentally challenged adults and offers community workshops in creativity. She serves on the board of directors for the Friends of Tampa Recreation and Creative Tampa Bay.

Lennon is the second artist to win the award. The 2004 winner was photographer Bud Lee.

Tower construction starts at Westshore Yacht Club

SUN BAY SOUTH - WCI Communities broke ground Sept. 28 on Castillo, a 80-unit, 16-story tower in the Westshore Yacht Club. Units are priced from $695,000 to more than $1-million. The tower is expected to be completed in summer 2007.

TAMPA - Manhattan Hairstyling Academy held a fundraiser to aid Hurricane Katrina victims Sept. 24. The academy offered services for a minimum donation of $5 per haircut for adults and $3 per haircut for children. It raised more than $1,400, which was donated to the United Way. The event was held at Manhattan Hairstyling Academy's three Tampa locations - 4315 S Manhattan Ave., 2317 E Fletcher Ave. and 3244 Lithia Pinecrest Road - and the one in St. Petersburg, 1720 16th St.

Lucky 10-millionth bus rider showered with gifts

DOWNTOWN - The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority last week celebrated its 10-millionth rider in the past year. Mary Smith, 72, of West Tampa was on her way to an appointment when she was surprised by HART's executive director Ray Miller.

Smith was awarded a year of free rides on HARTline, a year membership to Tampa Theatre, a family membership to Plant Museum, four tickets to Channelside Cinemas, brunch for two on Yacht Starship and a gift certificate to Hurricane Pass Outfitters.

She worked for 25 years in Hillsborough County as a school teacher's assistant. She is married and has 12 grandchildren. The celebration took place at HART's Marion Transit Center, 1211 N Marion St.
