Hurricane Katrina

Watch the Bucs, help a family displaced

SOHO - Four women promoting a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser on Sunday have almost everything they need.

They have a location (Po' Boys Creole Cafe), a time (noon to 4 p.m.) and a theme (watch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New York Jets).

There's only one thing their fundraising effort is missing: a recipient.

Their plan was to assist a displaced family, but the one they had in mind fell through, explained Anne Nyer, one of the fundraising foursome.

They already have the commitment of a benefactor to pay the rent for an apartment for a small family - preferably a single parent with one or two children - for a full year.

But Nyer and friend Amanda Matherne, both of South Tampa, have joined with buddies DeeDee Whitler of Temple Terrace and Lisa Thornsberry of St. Petersburg to do more.

They plan to hold several fundraisers to "make sure this family is better off than they were before the storm," said Matherne, who was raised near New Orleans.

The event at Po' Boys, a New Orleans-styled restaurant at 302 S Howard Ave., is a small kickoff for the fundraising effort.

A $10 donation earns one free drink of choice and a raffle ticket for a halftime prize giveaway. The quartet plans to schedule a larger event early next year.

Nyer said she is working hard to find a worthy displaced family but could use help. Anyone who knows of a small Katrina-displaced family in need can e-mail her at anne.nyer@gmail.com
