TARPON SPRINGS - Palm Harbor's Ashly Galante has been honored by Young American Bowling Alliance (USBC Youth) Sport Bowling for recording the nation's highest average. To be eligible for the recognition, members must have rolled a minimum of 48 games in the 2004-05 season. Galante will receive an acrylic star award.
Galante averaged 194.05 in the Scott Russell Junior Gold Sport League at Countryside Lanes in Clearwater and set the female season record.
"I love the challenge," said Galante, a 16-year-old
right-hander who is a junior at Tarpon Springs High School. "Since a Sport Bowling condition is less forgiving than a house shot, it forces me to be more consistent," she said. "On a Sport Bowling shot, you have to think more."
Players in multiple Sport Bowling leagues may be listed more than once in the top averages. Galante also was third (180.39). Robert Way, Sanford, N.C., and Robin Crawford, Grand Rapids, Mich., captured the USBC Sport Bowling adult high-average awards.
Derek Roseberry, Louisville, Ky., topped the boys scores.
Of the remaining top 10 national boys averages, four come from three locals. Terrance Reeves of Largo was fourth at 195.91 and sixth with 191.14. Ryan Brembs, St. Petersburg, was fifth (191.31). Clearwater's Justin Foraker was eighth (187.64).
Following Galante, who finished 30th in the USBC Team USA Championships, for the girls best averages were Kelly Fecke of Palm Harbor, fifth (174.46); and Clearwater's Crystal Stutler, seventh (173.59) and eighth (172.26).
PREPS: Osceola has captured the boys scratch lead (112) in Pinellas County high school competition.
The team was sparked last week by high games from Kenny Gernhardt (181), C.T. Maxey (193), Joe Ousley (195), Travis Reichert (210) and Matt Corsetti (218). Corsetti has the league's high average.
Boca Ciega, with 1041/2 points, trails Osceola in scratch play. Following are Countryside (103) and Northeast (1011/2). In handicapped competition, Dixie Hollins (89) heads the standings. Seminole (85) is second.
In girls scratch play, Seminole maintains the lead with 121 points. Fueling the squad last week were high games produced by Ciera Negretti (139), Ashley Goyette (162), Alex Gauthier (166) and Heather Janson (178). Tarpon Springs - led by Galante, who has the league's high average - trails the Warhawks by one point. Northeast (109) is next.
Pinellas Park has the handicapped top spot at 95. Lakewood (941/2) is next.
Largo No. 2 leads the junior varsity action with 1101/2 points.
FOR YOUTH PLAYERS: A new online magazine, USYouthBowler.com, made its debut last week as part of the USBC's continuing efforts to serve its young members.
The magazine includes fresh features, bowling tips and the accomplishments of peak performers. The site also contains links to information on scholarships, tournaments and other opportunities. PERFECT MATCH: Gene and Janet Vincent of Decatur, Ill., have the record for the most 300 games by a husband and wife, according to Bowl.com.
Does that make them the sport's best couple? Or would it be professionals Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Del Ballard or pro Chris Barnes and his wife , Lynda, of Team USA. The USBC is looking for the best duo. For suggestions or information, contact webmaster@bowl.com or write U.S. Bowler, Best Couple, 5301 S. 76th Street, Greendale, Wis. 53129.
