ROMULUS, Mich. - South Florida heat prevailed over a city whose last Super Bowl was an icy one.
Miami was awarded the 2010 Super Bowl on Thursday, a record 10th time the city will host the title game and record 15th time it will be in Florida.
"We love our city and we love our area. We think the weather is the best. We think we have the best hotels, the best restaurants, the best beaches and the best golf courses," Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga said.
Miami, Atlanta and Houston made a final pitch for the marquee event at an NFL owners meeting about 25 miles from Detroit's Ford Field, where the next Super Bowl will be played.
With New York, which had been conditionally awarded the game, out of the running, the NFL picked from three cities that lost a bid in May for the 2009 game, which went to Tampa.
The vote took three ballots, with Houston eliminated on the first. No city got the three-quarters vote needed on the second ballot and Miami won by a simple majority on the third.
VICK PROBABLE: Michael Vick felt better as he tested his sprained right knee in practice.
The Falcons' star quarterback believes he will start when the Patriots visit Sunday. Vick indicated he and the team might wait until that morning to make a final decision.
"Yeah, it's getting better, and the only way I can tell that is when I go out there and try to do some things on it," Vick said. "I'm trying to cut and plant a little bit ... I feel like today I progressed a little bit."
Coach Jim Mora still listed the two-time Pro Bowl selection as probable.
Vick left last week's win over Minnesota after Erasmus James fell on him in the second quarter.
49ERS: Left tackle Jonas Jennings almost certainly won't play in Sunday's game against the Colts after missing last week's loss in Mexico City with a torn labrum in his shoulder. The injury can only be fixed with surgery - but with the 49ers just four games into what's sure to be a long season, Jennings still has hope he can return with rest and rehabilitation.
Jennings was hurt in the third quarter of San Francisco's loss to Dallas on Sept. 25, with a new tear exacerbated by scarring from an old injury in the same joint.
BILLS: Reserve cornerback Kevin Thomas had surgery on his injured right knee for the second time this year and could miss the rest of the season.
The Bills never announced the surgery, but Thomas was spotted on crutches. Coach Mike Mularkey then said Thomas had surgery two weeks ago. Mularkey referred to it as a cleanup procedure after the player had surgery to repair a broken bone during the spring.
PACKERS: Rookie wide receiver Terrence Murphy will miss the rest of the season with an injured neck.
Murphy sustained neck trauma when he was hit on a kickoff return in the first half of the Packers loss to Carolina three nights ago. He spent two nights at a Charlotte, N.C., hospital before returning to Green Bay on Wednesday.
VIKINGS: Defensive end Kenechi Udeze, a starter in his second NFL season, will miss the remainder of the season with an injury to his left knee.
Udeze, hurt in Minnesota's game against New Orleans on Sept. 25, and had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday that revealed damage to the meniscus cartilage in his knee.
NFL EUROPE: NFL owners voted to extend their commitment to NFL Europe, their developments league, for five more years.
The league, with five franchises in Germany and one in Amsterdam, set an attendance record by averaging 18,965 fans a game last season.
