INVERNESS - Rachel Fults and Ashley Hoglund made sure Citrus clinched the third seed for the upcoming Class 4A, District 6 tournament.
Fults smacked 16 kills and Hoglund added 13 as the Hurricanes dominated the net on their way to a 25-9, 25-27, 25-10, 25-20 win over Lecanto on Thursday.
With the win, Citrus (10-6, 8-4) moves out of the bracket with Crystal River, the No. 7 team in Class 4A, for the 4A-6 tournament should it reach the district semifinals. Lecanto (10-12, 7-5), however, moves into the bracket as the fourth seed and would face the Pirates should it reach the semis.
Fults and Hoglund were nearly unstoppable as Citrus dominated most of the match against the Panthers, whom they had lost to in four games earlier this season.
"The girls wanted it," Citrus coach Alice Christian said. "It was an important district game and our last home game for our seniors, so the girls really wanted to do their best."
Krystal Boardman added 17 assists; Amanda Pretulac had 10.
"(Citrus) played really well," Lecanto coach Freddie Bullock said. "We got into the habit of passing the ball into the middle and we just can't do that because we just don't have the height."
The Hurricanes got five kills from Fults in the first game, jumped to a 7-0 lead and never looked back.
From there, Lecanto battled back with the final three points of the second game to pull even, but it struggled the rest of the way.
Fults smacked five kills during a 10-1 run in Game 3 to give Citrus momentum. The Hurricanes built as much as an 11-point lead in the fourth game before a late Panthers rally made things a bit closer.
