Deputies arrest woman on false information charge

By Times Staff Writer

BROOKSVILLE - A woman thought to be the victim of a carjacking early Thursday ended up being taken to jail on charges of giving false information to a Hernando County sheriff's deputy.

According to a sheriff's report, a deputy pursuing a man for questioning saw him jump into a vehicle occupied by Mabel Veronica Brown, 25, of Spring Hill on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and attempt to drive away.

However, as the deputy approached the car, the man fled.

Authorities said that Brown told them she did not know the man and that she didn't want to press charges.

But in reinterviewing Brown, deputies discovered that she had given conflicting Social Security numbers and two different names. She also claimed she did not know who owned the vehicle she had been driving.

However, when contacted, the vehicle's owner said Brown had picked up the car earlier that day at her residence in Dade City.

The car's owner declined to press charges in the matter. Brown was taken to the Hernando County Jail, where she was being held Friday in lieu of $500 bail.
