'Bodies' viewed by 100,000th set of eyes

TAMPA - The Museum of Science and Industry added another entry to its history books Friday when visitor No. 100,000 for "Bodies, the Exhibition" walked through the doors.

Susan Cross, a retired science teacher on vacation from Rochester Hills, Mich., earned the honor just before 10:30 a.m.

"No way!" she said with television cameras and flashing lights focused on her. "Now I'm famous."

"Bodies," a controversial exhibit of fully preserved and posed cadavers and body parts, opened to the public Aug. 18, two days ahead of schedule. The exhibit lasts through Feb. 26.

Friday's milestone surpassed the success of MOSI's Titanic exhibit in 2003-04. It took four months for Titanic to reach its 100,000-visitor mark. "Bodies" did it in less than half that time.

"We're pretty pleased this happened so fast," said Candace Street, a MOSI spokeswoman.

Cross had come to Tampa to visit her daughter, who attends the University of South Florida. As visitor No. 100,000, Cross received a "Bodies" T-shirt and tote bag, commemorative mug, exhibit catalog, dinner gift certificate and a one-year membership for a family of five.

For ticket information about "Bodies" or the museum, visit www.mosi.org or call 813 987-6000.
