Castillo knocks out Corrales

LAS VEGAS - With one vicious left hook, Jose Luis Castillo stopped Diego Corrales in the fourth round Saturday night to win the rematch of a fight for the ages.

Castillo landed the left hook flush on the side of Corrales' face and immediately raised his hands in victory as Corrales went to the canvas.

Corrales tried to get up and finally did at the count of nine but was wobbly and referee Joe Cortez waved the fight to a close at 47 seconds of the fourth round.

"I knew he wasn't getting up," Castillo said. "I told everyone I would knock him out before the seventh round."

Castillo nearly missed his chance for revenge the day before by weighing in at 1381/2 pounds, well over the lightweight limit of 135 pounds. But the fight went on anyway, title or not, and some 15,000 fans came to cheer their favorite on.

SAILING: Alinghi takes two

America's Cup holder Alinghi, with St. Petersburg yachtsman Ed Baird at the helm, won twice Saturday to move past BMW Oracle after four fleet races in the Louis Vuitton Act 9 regatta off the Sicilian coast. The Swiss defender edged the American boat by less than 1 minute in both fleet races to total 46 points, one ahead of BMW Oracle, which led Alinghi 23-22 after the first day of sailing Friday.

The Louis Vuitton Acts are a series of 14 regattas that started last year as a prelude to the 2007 America's Cup, which will be held off Valencia, Spain.

BASKETBALL: Curry works out with Knicks, says he's fine

Practicing again for the first time in nearly seven months, new New York Knicks center Eddy Curry insists he will be ready for the season opener. The Knicks acquired Curry, 22, from the Bulls last week, more than six months after he had an irregular heartbeat that caused him to miss the final 13 games of last season and the playoffs.

SOCCER: Stars stay alive

Youri Djokaeff's goal in the 68th minute kept the MetroStars' playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over D.C. United. The victory was the first for MetroStars interim coach Mo Johnston. He replaced Bob Bradley, who was fired Tuesday.

REVOLUTION 2, WIZARDS 2: Jose Cancela and Clint Dempsey scored to help New England overcome a two-goal deficit for the draw with host Kansas City. Eastern Conference-leading New England improved to 16-7-8.

FC DALLAS 0, COLORADO 0: Dario Sala had three saves in his first career game to help host FC Dallas tie Colorado.

CREW 2, FIRE 1: Eric Vasquez and Simon Elliott scored second-half goal for visiting Columbus. The loss eliminated Chicago's changes of catching D.C. United for second place.

ET CETERA

TENNIS: Third-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia beat top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 6-1, 6-4 Saturday to reach the final at the Open de Moselle in Metz, France.

CYCLING: Gilberto Simoni, a two-time Giro d'Italia champion, broke away in the final uphill stretch to win the Tour of Emilia race in Bologna, Italy.

GYMNASTICS: Olga Kapranova won the individual all-around title at the World Rhythmic Championships, helping Russia sweep every gold in the competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

RUNNING: Moses Kemboi of Kenya overcame driving rain and blustery winds to set a course record while winning the Greater Hartford Marathon. Abeba Tola of Ethiopia won the women's race.

SPEEDSKATING: American Apolo Anton Ohno, the 2002 Olympic gold medalist, was called for impeding halfway through the 500 meters quarterfinals and was disqualified for the second time in as many days at the South Korean World Cup event. Ohno was eliminated from the 1,500 meters Friday for shoving South Korean Lee Ho-suk. China's Li Haonan won the men's 500 meters with a time of 42.583 seconds. In the women's 500 meters, China's Wang Meng won the gold in 44.736 and compatriot Fu Tianyu was second.
