BEARS WIN FIRST ROAD BIG 12 GAME

Baylor finally got to celebrate in a Big 12 stadium other than its own. Ryan Havens made three field goals as Baylor won its first Big 12 road game 23-13 over Iowa State.

"It's another gorilla off our back," Baylor coach Guy Morriss said. "It seems like this might legitimize us as a football team and program. I don't think we'll be able to sneak up on anybody anymore."

The Bears (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) had been 0-37 on the road in the Big 12 and lost 38 consecutive road conference games overall. Their last league road win had been Nov.11, 1995, 48-7 over SMU in the old Southwest Conference.

Havens, who earlier made a 49- and 21-yard field goal, put Baylor up 16-13 with a 36-yarder 2:41 into the fourth. After the Cyclones' second second-half fumble, Baylor went 81 yards in 12 plays, capped by Paul Mosley's 1-yard touchdown run that made it 23-13 with 1:36 left.

"I can't even express in words how disappointed we are in this loss," said defensive end Jason Berryman, whose Cyclones fell to 3-2 and 0-2 in the Big 12. "We didn't play Cyclone football like we know how."

PATH TO PERFECTION

Among 119 I-A teams, only nine remain unbeaten (all from BCS conferences). And not including conference title games, only two regular-season games between unbeatens remain, Texas Tech at Texas on Oct.22 and UCLA at Southern Cal on Dec.3.

ACC (2): Florida State, Virginia Tech.

BIG TEN (1): Penn State.

BIG 12 (2): Texas, Texas Tech.

PAC-10 (2): Southern Cal, UCLA.

SEC (2): Alabama, Georgia.

OBSCURE GAME OF THE DAY

MONMOUTH 45, SACRED HEART 14: Miles Austin caught 10 passes for 235 yards (197 in the first half) and four touchdowns for the host Hawks. The Pioneers sent three snaps over their punter's head, two resulting in safeties.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY

BRIAN TOAL, BOSTON COLLEGE: On offense, the sophomore linebacker who plays fullback in short-yardage situations scored his team-leading fourth and fifth touchdowns of the season on 1-yard runs in a 28-17 win over Virginia.

KENT SMITH, CENTRAL MICH.: The senior ran for 38 yards and passed for 31 during a 14-play, 76-yard go-ahead drive that took 7:12. He capped it by picking up a dropped snap and running 2 yards for a touchdown and 14-10 win over Army.

TYRELL SUTTON AND BRETT BASANEZ, NORTHWESTERN: Sutton, a freshman, ran for 244 yards and three touchdowns and caught a touchdown and Basanez, a senior, was 26-of-36 for 361 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a touchdown.

BLAKE POWERS, INDIANA: The sophomore threw four touchdowns in a 36-13 win over Illinois, surpassing Antwaan Randle El's school record of 17 in a season.

LENDALE WHITE, SOUTHERN CAL: The junior rushed for 179 yards and four scores in a 42-21 win over Arizona.

BRAD EKWEREKWU, MISSOURI: The junior receiver ran for a touchdown on a 13-yard reverse and threw a 30-yard touchdown with 26 seconds left in the first half in a 38-31 win over Oklahoma State.

CONFERENCE OF THE DAY

ACC: Florida State (3-0) and Miami (2-1) remained contenders to reach the title game with relatively easy wins. But count Virginia, No.25 in the AP preseason poll, out and Boston College (2-1) in after the Eagles' 28-17 win. After starting 3-0, including a win over Duke, the Cavaliers have lost two straight, including 45-33 to Maryland last weekend.

MINICONFERENCE OF THE DAY

COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF'S: Down 24-17, Navy tied it on Reggie Campbell's 40-yard run with 2:22 left then beat Air Force 27-24 on Joey Bullen's last-second 46-yard field. Navy, which won the past two trophies awarded to the team with the best record in games between the three major service academies, will retain it if it beats Army, loser of 10 in a row, Dec.3.

NUMBERS OF THE DAY

13: Wins in 13 games against Kentucky for Steve Spurrier after South Carolina's 44-16 win.

16: Consecutive times Michigan had beaten Minnesota before a 23-20 loss.
