Airliner forced to land early

CHANTILLY, Va. - An airliner en route from New York City to Miami made a precautionary landing Saturday at Washington Dulles International Airport after smoke was reported aboard, an airport spokesman said.
American Airlines Flight 1393 landed safely and taxied under its own power, said Rob Yingling, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The passengers were fine, he said.
Airline spokesman Tim Wagner characterized the problem as an electrical odor, rather than smoke, detected in the cabin. The plane, which carried 102 passengers, two pilots and four flight attendants, was taken out of service, he said, and a replacement was sent to Dulles.
According to American Airlines' Web site, the plane, a Boeing 757, left New York's LaGuardia Airport for Miami International Airport at 5:29 p.m. The crew reported the problem soon after 6 p.m., Yingling said.
