TAMPA - Cambridge overcame an early miscue and scored 42 unanswered points to defeat Temple Heights 42-7 in a Class A, District 6 game on Saturday.
Temple Heights struck first as Cambridge's errant lateral was returned by Mike Perea for a first-quarter touchdown. But Cambridge, combining an effective offense with a stingy defense, took over after that.
Making his first start at quarterback, eighth-grader Marquis Perry was 3-of-3 for 84 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass to Michael DeLaRosa to open the scoring for Cambridge. Perry also caught a 12-yard touchdown from Korey Sims and ran in from 12 yards out for a third score. Sims, returning from an injury, and Perry shared signal-calling duties in the second half.
Cambridge (4-2, 2-2 in A-6) had 293 total yards and held Temple Heights (0-6, 0-2) to 46 yards rushing and 29 passing.
"Our offense finally got it going tonight," Cambridge coach Rick Shears said. "We were shut out last week by Keswick Christian, ranked No. 1 in the state at the time, so we were very pleased with our play in this game."
Will Bakos, Austin Welti and Chris Widel added scores for Cambridge on runs of 17, 2, and 37 yards, respectively.
