It looked like Springstead was going to stun Nature Coast Tech in the Sharks' gym last Tuesday night. Springstead won the first games 25-20 and 25-8. Then, Nature Caost (9-10) took 25-16, 25-16, 15-8 contests.
Ileanna Santos hammered 11 kills and Lauren Wajerski served 12 straight points in the final game. Santos had 21 kills.
" "Randi Roppolo and Emily Brockhoff came in and played awesome," the Sharks' Maria Garcia said.
The Eagles (5-10, 4-9 in district play) were led in the opening game by Katrina Cook , who posted seven straight serves and 11 overall. Hilary Fiocca had 12 consecutive service points in Springstead's Game-2 win, and Brooke Seaman logged four kills.
Then the Eagles stopped winning. "I just wish I had a magic wand and could fix this," Eagles coach Jessica Allnutt said.
CENTRAL: Senior hitter Nikki Weaver , who has 200 kills, should break the team's single-season record soon. Erica Livengood owns the mark (211).
River Ridge, which beat host Central 25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 25-13, is undefeated and the top seed in its district tournament. Weaver produced nine kills. Noemi Rivera had 22 assists and Mackenzie Roberts nine service points.
The Bears defeated Bishop McLaughlin 25-6, 25-22, 25-11 on Thursday in a road match. Rivera recorded nine assists and 13 straight service points.
Central is 11-6, 5-3 in district play. It's clinched second in the Bears' district.
Central beat host Wesley Chapel 27-25, 25-17, 25-22. Rivera posted 21 assists and eight service points.
"Nikki is hitting harder than she has all season," coach Vicki Weaver said of the Bears' progress. "She knocked one girl down in that match."
Nikki Weaver, Rivera, Roberts and Dana Perriera have better than 90 percent success in serving.
HERNANDO CHRISTIAN ACADEMY: The Lions topped Montverde 25-5, 25-16, 25-18 in Clermont.
