County Computer Club to teach video editing

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando Computer Club will offer a tutorial presentation on Pinnacle Studio Plus for video editing at 7 p.m. Monday at the Shrine Club, 13400 Montour St.

The free program will be presented by professional photographer/videographer Ed Poltonowicz, who is also a member of the computer club. He will explain what to look for in a video camera, camera techniques and techniques of video editing. Analogue and digital equipment use will be included. Selection of scenes, use of transitions and time lines, and the differences between storyboard and time line views will be discussed.

Antidrug coalition seeks exhibitors, vendors

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Community Anti-Drug Coalition's Youth Alcohol Abuse Prevention Initiative is seeking exhibitors and vendors for the "ChillSmart-Don't Start" Family Fun Extravaganza. The event will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.

Agencies and business catering to youths are invited to participate with exhibits, entertainment and interactive activities. Food vendors are welcome.

Chocachatti Elementary sets orientation schedule

BROOKSVILLE - Chocachatti Elementary School will offer orientation meetings for potential enrollment beginning in November. Orientations will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 3, 4 p.m. Nov. 9 and 7 p.m. Jan. 12 in the cafeteria. The school is at 4135 California St.

Attendance at one of these meetings is required in order to receive an application for enrollment to the school. Those who have previously attended an orientation or are on this year's waiting list can reapply for the next school year by stopping by the office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays, Nov. 1 through Jan. 12.

While most students will be selected through a lottery, a percentage will be selected through an audition or portfolio process. Students with special talents in art, music, theater (drama) or dance can apply. Music, theater and dance applicants must submit a videotape (VHS) or CD. Art students must submit a portfolio of at least five original works. Parents or guardians can stop by the school to pick up details and requirements starting in November. The deadline to turn in tapes and portfolios is Dec. 2.

Jail celebrates expansion with an open house

BROOKSVILLE - Area residents are invited to an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Hernando County Jail, 16425 Spring Hill Drive, west of U.S. 41.

Visitors will have an opportunity to view the newly completed jail expansion project, which includes a new 240-bed inmate housing wing, an expanded booking/receiving area, a new courtroom, a reconfigured visitation center and renovation of the administrative sections of the facility. The renovations cost about $11.8-million. For information, call the Hernando County administrator's office at 754-4002.

The Hernando County Tourist Development Council has awarded $20,500 to local organizations to promote their events. The following amounts were awarded: $3,000 to the city of Brooksville for Founder's Week; $2,500 to the Heritage Museum for the Brooksville Raid and another $2,500 for brochures and other events; $2,500 to the Hernando County Cattleman's Association for the Hernando County Rodeo and Barbecue Festival; $2,000 to the Hernando County Fine Arts Council for the Hernando County Arts, Crafts and Music Festival; $2,000 to the Will McClean Foundation for the Florida Arts in Education-Will McClean Music Festival; $2,000 to the Hernando County Fair Association for the Hernando County Fair and Youth Livestock Show; $1,000 to the Humane Society of the Nature Coast for the Nature Coast Pet Expo; $1,000 to the American Lung Association of Florida - Gulf Coast Area for the annual Clean Air Bike Ride; $1,000 to the West Central Florida Council Boy Scouts of America for the Sand Hill Turkey Shoot; and $1,000 to the Withlacoochee Rockhounds for the annual Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show.

Spring Hill fire workshop slated for today canceled

SPRING HILL - The Spring Hill Fire Commission has canceled its workshop that was scheduled for today.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Spring Hill Fire Rescue building, 3445 Bob Hartung Court. For information, call 688-5030.

Tickets are available for shelter fundraiser

SPRING HILL - Tickets are available for the "Whiskers Ball," a black tie formal event on Nov. 5 at the Lodge on Forest Oaks Boulevard.

The event is a fundraiser for the SPCA of Hernando County, with all proceeds going to the no-kill shelter. Tickets are $50 each.

The event will include music, dancing and a gourmet dinner. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be at 6 p.m., and dinner will be at 7 p.m. Awards and prizes will be given out.
