SUV linked to fatal hit-and-run, FHP says

The vehicle has the kind of damage expected in the U.S. 19 crash, say officials, who now have an unidentified "person of interest" who has not been arrested.

WEEKI WACHEE - Authorities found the sports utility vehicle that may have hit and killed a pedestrian on U.S. 19 Monday morning.

They also have a "person of interest" connected to the hit-and-run accident.

"But that's about it right now," Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Larry Coggins said Tuesday afternoon.

No charges have been filed. No one has been arrested.

FHP investigators found an abandoned 2001 black GMC Jimmy "somewhere" in the county late Monday night, Coggins said. The SUV had the kind of damage they expected.

James H. Hume, 36, whose address is listed on the FHP report as a Weeki Wachee Pak Mail store where he rented a post office box, was walking north on U.S 19, when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the collision, witnesses told investigators, the SUV slowed almost to a stop, then sped off toward Citrus County. The vehicle was described as a "dark-colored van or SUV" with damage to the front-right end and on the fender and down the right side.

Authorities asked anybody with any information to call the FHP's Brooksville office or the Hernando County Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line. A tip came in.
