Teen killed when hydraulic lift fails

By Times Staff Writer
Published October 12, 2005

TAMPA - Hillsborough sheriff's investigators on Tuesday confirmed the identity of the Ruskin teen who died Monday afternoon after the 1992 Mercury Marquis he was repairing fell on top of him.

Raul Rivera Jr., 17, of 3624 30th Street SE had the Marquis up on a hydraulic lift at 4:25 p.m. at his house. He stuck his head into the wheel well when the lift dropped, according to sheriff's officials.

The car fell on top of Rivera, and relatives and neighbors pulled him from under the Marquis and performed CPR until rescue workers arrived.

But Rivera never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. at South Bay Hospital.
