ST. PETERSBURG - Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes will be the keynote speaker at Saturday's CollegeBound conference at the downtown Hilton Hotel.
The event, which also will award 10 scholarships in a random drawing, is for young men and women who want to go to college but may not know how to apply or seek financial aid.
Admission is free and open to the public. Parents are welcome. Registration remains open, and walk-ups are welcome on the day of the conference, director Todd Smith said.
The conference is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Hilton is at 333 First St. S.
Dawes hit the international sports scene when she and her teammates won the bronze in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics gymnastics competition. She was the first African-American gymnast to compete in the Olympics.
In the 1996 Olympics, Dawes became the first African-American to win an individual gymnastics medal, winning a bronze for her floor routine. She and her teammates won the team gold.
A popular speaker, Dawes focuses on health issues, sports participation, equality for women and African-Americans, and self-esteem. Her CollegeBound speech will be during the event's luncheon, noon to 1:15 p.m.
Other conference sessions will include discussions about the college application process, standardized testing tips, financial literacy, collegiate athletics, careers and adult continuing education.
The faith-based event is supported through sponsorships.
