Renowned musician shares insights with community

Composer and conductor Glenn Burleigh is in town as part of the anniversary celebration of the Alumni Singers.

ST. PETERSBURG - Renowned composer and choral conductor Glenn Burleigh, here for a series of workshops this week ending with a Saturday concert, taught some finer musical points to youngsters Monday at Perkins Elementary School.

More than 100 children took part in the session, said Carolyn Hobbs, a co-chair for the 25th anniversary celebration of the Alumni Singers. Tuesday, Burleigh was at Gibbs High School, where the Alumni Singers got their start.

As part of its yearlong anniversary observance, the group invited Burleigh to spend a week here. The workshops and concert are sponsored in part by the Florida Humanities Council and the Pinellas County Arts Council.

Burleigh is scheduled to be interviewed at 9:30 a.m. today on WRXB 1590-AM. Still open at a cost of $20 per person are workshops from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg, 701 Beach Drive NE.

Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

A concert, free and open to the public, is 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian.

Burleigh is acclaimed for his work in classical, gospel and jazz. He has appeared at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
