Swing, jazz to be played in park

SEMINOLE - Swing and jazz by Lounge Cat will be featured at Friday's Music in the Park from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road. The concert is sponsored by Seminole Lake Rotary Club. This is the last in a series of free evening live music concerts. Attendees should bring blankets or chairs. Food and beverages will be for sale. Alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted in the park. During the concert, the city of Seminole will collect hurricane relief donations and supplies - nonperishable food, gifts cards, personal care supplies and diapers - for the city's adopted city, Bay St. Louis, Miss. Seminole recreation's "Field of Screams" takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28. The annual Seminole community Halloween event will be held at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St. The event features a "Spook Zone," including bounce houses and carnival games, a haunted trail, costume contest, freaky short movies, a family photo area and free Halloween candy. Food and beverages will be available. Admission wristbands cost $5 and will be available at the Spook Zone and haunted trail entrances. For more information, call 391-8345.

The third annual Doggy Derby, sponsored by Seminole Aquatics at Seminole Recreation Complex, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 29. Tickets, $5 per dog with no charge for owners, must be purchased in advance and require proof of rabies vaccination. The event marks the last day of the pool season. A free business leads and skills development workshop, "Creating Effective Newsletters that Generate Business," will be held by the Seminole Chamber of Commerce at 7:30 a.m. today at St. Petersburg College, Seminole campus, TLC Building, Room 108. Faith Presbyterian Church will hold its semiannual flea market beginning at 6 p.m. today. The flea market will also be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Household articles, clothing, plants, toys, baskets, small appliances, Christmas items, pictures, jewelry, books, crystal and more will be for sale. Lunch will be available Thursday and Friday. New treatment options for people who wear dentures, including bone grafting and dental implants, will be discussed by Richard Borgner and Sam Tadros at 3:30 today at the Seminole Library, 9200 113th St. The doctors will explain several studies that help defray some of the expense of treatment for those who qualify and will answer questions on all phases of dentistry. The Osceola High School Class of 1985 will observe its 20-year class reunion this weekend. Activities begin Friday night at Bongo's, next to the Tradewinds Island Grand Resort in St. Pete Beach. Razzmatazz, an area magician, will entertain at the Seminole Recreation Center Senior Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The meal will be provided by Freedom Square. No recreation card is required, but attendees must register three days in advance.

The recreation complex also is offering members two trips in October:

The Bavarian Oktoberfest Folk Festival in Sarasota: Festival features live continuous German entertainment, German food, imported beer, an arts and crafts show, an antique Volkswagen auto show, and more. The bus will leave the recreation complex Saturday at 10 a.m. and return by 6 p.m. The cost is $27 per person. A recreation membership card is required to participate.

Solomon's Castle in Ona, Oct. 27: The trip, which will include lunch at Boat in the Moat, leaves at 9 a.m. and returns by 4 p.m. Solomon's Castle was created by Howard Solomon, an international sculptor and artist, out of collected and recycled items. The Boat in the Moat is a replica of a 16th Century Spanish galleon. The trip costs $42 per person and includes the bus trip, entrance fee and lunch. A recreation card is required to participate.

Family Camp in the Park will be held from 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21, to 8:30 a.m. Oct. 22 at Seminole City Park. Participants will pitch a tent, have a hot dog dinner, a good night snack and enjoy the entertainment and activities before sleeping under the stars with the sounds of nature. The cost is $20 per family, with a two-tent maximum for each family. All children must be supervised by an adult. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Seminole Recreation Center by Friday. At least one family member must have a recreation card to purchase tickets. For more information, call the Seminole Recreation Center at 391-8345.
