  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

NEWSMAKERS

Michael Hardcastle, a sophomore at Springstead High School, was recently named a winner in the 2005 Ayn Rand Institute Anthem essay contest. Hardcastle's essay was one of only 236 ninth- and 10th-grade submissions selected for recognition from more than 14,000 entries to this international essay contest. Hardcastle is the son of Larry and Zarena Hardcastle of Spring Hill.

Flammer Ford of Spring Hill is offering an incentive for high school juniors and seniors to attain higher grades and perfect attendance. For the first three marking periods, each student who gets an A or has perfect attendance will get two entry forms. Each student who gets a B will get one entry form. The forms will be put into a hopper, and at the end of the third marking period 15 finalists will be drawn. One of those 15 will then be drawn to win a 2006 Ford Mustang, donated by Flammer Ford. Students may go to Flammer Ford on U.S. 19 with their report cards to fill out entry forms. The winner must be present to win and will be responsible for any taxes, title and registration fees and license plate.
