PERFORMING ARTS

A VIDEO OF VERDI'S "LA TRAVIATA' will be shown at 12:30 p.m. today at Centennial Library, 5740 Moog Road, Holiday. Maria McLaughlin plays Violetta and Walter MacNeil is Alfredo, with Brent Ellis as Germont. The London Philharmonic Orchestra accompanies. Admission is free.

"BUGSY MALONE JR.,' a musical spoof of 1920s gangsters movies, opens today at the Forum at Stage West Community Playhouse, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. Shows are at 8 p.m. today, Saturday and Oct. 21 and 22; and at 2 p.m. Sunday and Oct. 23. Tickets are $8, reserved seating. THE COTEE RIVER OCTOBER BIKE FEST of motorcycles will be held Saturday and Sunday around Orange Lake and downtown New Port Richey. KEYBOARD PLAYER BOB SPEAKER and the Hernando Harmonizers Men's Barbershop Chorus will perform a benefit concert for hurricane victims at 7 p.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6193 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. GYPSYWIND ACOUSTIC "NEWGRASS' MUSICAL GROUP will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Tarpon Springs Sunset Beach Concert at Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs. Those who attend may bring picnic dinners and beverages (no alcohol), beach chairs and/or blankets. The concession stand will sell hot dogs, sodas, nachos and popcorn. The concert is free.

AN OPENING RECEPTION FOR "A SPLASH OF COLOR' all-media art show will be held 4 to 6 p.m. today at the West Pasco Art Guild gallery, 6206 Jefferson St., New Port Richey. Show judge Carin Wiseman, a teacher at Pasco Arts Council, will announce the winners of the show during the reception. The show will continue through Oct. 28. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays; and 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays.

"THE FRONT PORCH FLORIDA' art and music festival and antique appraisal at Willow Arts will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the gallery, 16921 Gunn Highway, Odessa. Entertainers are Steve Wallace at 11 a.m., Florida Songstory at noon, Bobby Hicks at 1 p.m. and Mary Ann DiNella at 2 p.m. There will be a pumpkin patch for kids. Exhibits will be by artists, photographers, ceramicists and others.

"GLIMPSES OF REALITY,' an exhibit of mostly representational art, continues through Oct. 29 at Greater New Port Richey Main Street and Progress Energy Art Gallery, 6231 Grand Blvd., New Port Richey. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays; also by appointment. Admission is free.

THE WEST PASCO QUILTERS' GUILD INC. is exhibiting small to king-sized quilts in "Home Is Where the Heart Is" through Nov. 23 at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center, 101 S Pinellas Ave. (Alt. U.S. 19, with clock tower on top), Tarpon Springs. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. A quilt appraisal ($5 oral, $35 written) and lecture on how to care for antique quilts will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday; a quilted fashion show on Nov. 5; and a children's quilting day on Nov. 19. There will be an ongoing quilt auction.

PASCO ARTS COUNCIL'S art center continues its show, "Family ArtLinks" Exhibition, or "Is It True Art Runs in Families?" through Oct. 29. A display of "Yard Art," made up of one-of-a-kind birdbaths and bird houses by the center's pottery students, is integrated into the show. The center is at 5744 Moog Road, Holiday. THE FLORIDA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY'S 34th anniversary show continues through Oct. 30 at Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, 600 Klosterman Road (a quarter-mile west of U.S. 19), Tarpon Springs. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. STAGE WEST COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE will hold auditions for the Agatha Christie mystery Black Coffee at 1 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. THE "BE A STAR VOCAL COMPETITION' will be held by the Hudson Seafest, with the three winners performing at the Seafest on Nov. 19. There will be cash awards and prizes worth $3,000, including a demo recording session for the first-place adult winner. Entries will be accepted in four age categories; entry fee is $50. "PETER PAN' DANCE SUPERVISOR Alan Coats of New York will give two workshops on Saturday at Sells' Broadway Dance Company, 7296 State Road 54, New Port Richey. Coats danced in the 1999 revival of Peter Pan on Broadway, as well as in the Broadway production of Crazy for You and Me and My Girl. He will teach dance steps from the Cathy Rigby production of Peter Pan at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center through Sunday. The 10 to 11 a.m. session will be for ages 8-11; the 11 a.m. to noon session for ages 12 and older. The fee of $60 for each session will be donated to "Broadway Cares, Equity Fights AIDS." PASCO ART COUNCIL'S art center will accept arts and crafts to sell (six to 12 pieces) during the annual Holiday House exhibit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday through Oct. 22. LONGLEAF FINE ARTS ON THE VILLAGE GREEN will register entrants for its annual fine arts juried show and sale through Oct. 31. Participants may enter ceramics, computer digital art, drawings, fiber art, glass, graphics, printmaking, jewelry, metal works, mixed media, paintings, photos, sculpture and wood items. NEW PORT RICHEY'S "FOUNDERS DAY' celebration will be Oct. 21, 22 and 23 in Sims Park, around Orange Lake and in the Cotee River. Events include scary storytelling, Coffee House Art Scene, a carved jack-o'-lantern contest, the "Sink or Swim" river raft race, live music, a car show, photo contest, boat tours, children's activities, food and beverage vendors, a carnival midway, and other activities. THE COMEDY-DRAMA "THE GOOD TIMES ARE KILLING ME' will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21; 3 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22; and 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at Selby Auditorium on the Saint Leo University campus, off State Road 52, 4 miles east of Interstate 75 (Exit 285). The play is about the interracial friendship between two 12-year-old girls in the 1960s. Admission is free.

THE SIXTH ANNUAL CLASSICAL ELEGANCE dinner show will be held Oct. 21 at Silverthorn Country Club (off Barclay), Brooksville. The University of South Florida Chamber Singers will entertain. THE MICKEY FINN SHOW, a Dixieland band, honky-tonk style show, will be presented at 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at Pasco-Hernando Community College Performing Arts Center, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey. The show played 420 weeks at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
