Man convicted in killing over $20 bet

LARGO - A jury convicted a St. Petersburg man of second-degree murder Wednesday for shooting to death a man after a fight after a pick-up basketball game two years ago.

Anquantae McDuffie, 22, was convicted of shooting to death Daniel Marcus Gary, a 21-year-old father of two. McDuffie also was convicted of attempted murder for shooting Tyreece Rutledge in the back, paralyzing him below the waist.

The shooting occurred behind Southside Fundamental Middle School on Aug. 17, 2003, after an argument over a $20 bet on a pick-up basketball game, police reported.

A sentencing date has been set for Dec. 21. McDuffie faces life in prison.
