Key players in Florida's fledgling bioscience community will be meeting Oct. 24 and 25 in Delray Beach at the eighth annual BioFlorida conference. Harry Orf, vice president of operations at Scripps Florida, will brief the trade organization about his organization's expansion into Florida. Gov. Jeb Bush, who was instrumental in recruiting Scripps using $310-million in state funds, will receive a special honor at the conference. The national Biotechnology Industry Organization in Washington, D.C., which represents more than 1,100 biotech companies, also will present Bush with its BIO Governor of the Year award.
The BioFlorida event will offer panels in three areas: science, business and dealmaking. In addition to Gov. Bush, the speakers will include Dennis J. Purcell, senior managing director of biotech venture fund Aisling Capital; Dr. Leroy Hood, president of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle; and Dr. Hilary Koprowski, who discovered the first vaccine against poliomyelitis.
The conference will be held at the Marriott Hotel on North Ocean Boulevard in Delray Beach. Registration is available online (www.bioflorida.com) or at the door. Cost is $350 for BioFlorida members, $100 for students and $400 for all others.
