Students sell game spots on Citropoly

A Future Business Leaders of America chapter wants businesses to help them create a local version of Monopoly.

INVERNESS - Citrus High School's Future Business Leaders of America is inviting area businesses to make themselves the Boardwalks and Pennsylvania Avenues of Citrus County.

The students are attempting to raise money by selling properties on the Citropoly game they hope to produce. This local version of Monopoly will help businesses advertise and help the students to learn more about business and raise the money they need to attend Future Business Leaders of America competitions.

The group's adviser, business teacher Terri Cooke, who is also the district FBLA adviser, said the competitions help students practice business skills such as public speaking and interviewing for jobs.

"It (participating in competitions) gets quite expensive," Cooke said. "It's limited by the amount of resources we have." The competitions are put on at the district, state and national levels.

Cooke would also like to take her FBLA students to visit businesses in larger cities so they can become aware of broader career opportunities.

Selling properties on a Citropoly board is, in itself, a chance for students to learn skills and get a feel for the real world.

"I think they're a little surprised that people say "No' a lot," Cooke said.

Junior Nicole Peters, 17, president of the FBLA district that includes Citrus, Marion and Levy counties, said she realizes a similar game has been produced in Citrus County before this.

But she said she hopes this can become a collector's item.

Interested businesses can purchase a property for $225. Corner properties and the "fate cards" are $500. The benefits include the advertising, the chance to help future businessmen and businesswomen, and golf.

Hernando County's World Woods Golf Club has partnered with Citrus High's FBLA and is offering three certificates to each Citropoly property owner entitling four players to 18 holes of golf, in the same day, including green fee, cart fee, lunch and tax for $28 per person.

Businesses also have the option to purchase patron ads for $25. These are one-line advertisements that will be printed in the center of the game board.

The students must sell at least 32 of the 40 property spaces to produce the game. Forty properties fill out the board. To purchase property or a patron ad, or to get information, call Cooke at 726-2241, ext. 266.
