  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Career advice

CraigsList.org/about/best/sfo/101949754.html

Finding decent employees is a struggle. Is it any wonder? If we work at a larger company, we stuff the job description in the political correctness mincer and end up with dross. Here's a gorgeously frank outline of what companies are looking for and how to present yourself. If you're looking for a gig, print this out and keep it.

You light up my life

www.BrightFeetSlippers.com/

From time to time I rue the day I applied for a credit card. That day marked the point when I was able to order utter rubbish over the Internet, such as slippers with lights in them. Yes, somebody has finally got around to combining comfy footwear with battery-powered headlights. Time will tell if they are worth $39.95plus shipping. I do know I'm wearing them to my next condo boardmeeting.

IM on the run

meebo.com/

AOL's Web version of its instant messaging software is a bitclunky. But it fills a purpose if you need to squirt out a quicktext missive to your universe. The next time you're in a pinch, remember the oddly named Meebo. It's a much cleaner version of Web-based IM and also allows you to log on to MSN, Yahoo or Jabber/Gtalk if you use those services.

Drop a dime

www.PayPhone-Project.com/

I was jogging in our nation's capital recently and counted no less than five carcasses of former pay phones on the streets. As I wheezed by the last one and barked an order for takeout food into my Motorola RAZR, I envisioned a 78 rpm record bumping intoan iPod. The thought got me wondering if pay phones are to be extinct, and I found this site. It's truly a nerd's salute to old technology. It's worth a visit for the pictures alone.

Spam magnets

TipMonkies.com/2005/10/04/disposable-e-mail-address-services

A disposable e-mail address is a thing of beauty. It allows regular people to register with potentially questionable sites and keep one's prized personal e-mail address crud-free. But who knew there were so manyfrom which to choose? This guide will give you the rundown on the more popular ones and an explanation of how theywork. My money's on Mailinator and SpamGourmet.
