Smuggling suspect caught

By Times Staff Writer
Published October 19, 2005

TAMPA - U.S. marshals and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested a fugitive downtown near the federal courthouse Tuesday.

Authorities converged on Martin Francis McLymont, 34, as he stood with friends in the Sharks Club patio in downtown Tampa. He was wanted in Corpus Christi, Texas, for failing to appear on marijuana smuggling charges, federal officials said.

Authorities said he has avoided arrest since 2004, when he learned he was facing the possibility of a 40-year prison sentence. On June 30, 2004, he violated his pretrial release conditions and fled to the Tampa Bay area.

In May 2005, as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tried to arrest McLymont, he jumped out of a second-floor window and evaded arrest.

McLymont was booked into the Hillsborough County jail and is scheduled to appear in federal court Wednesday.
