Tarpon Springs approves 'first choice' as fire chief

TARPON SPRINGS - City commissioners Tuesday voted to approve Stephen R.M. Moreno as fire rescue chief.

Moreno, who has been the fire chief in Americus, Ga., since August 1993, starts his new job Nov. 1. He will earn more than $92,000 a year and use of a city vehicle. Moreno was chosen from six finalists who were interviewed in late August. "He was clearly our first choice," City Manager Ellen Posivach said Tuesday. "I think his credentials speak for themselves." Moreno graduated from the National Fire Academy's executive officer program in 2002. He will replace former fire rescue Chief Kevin Bowman, who left to return to firefighting as a district captain.
