Hernando-Pasco Hospice opens new 16-bed center

DADE CITY - Hernando-Pasco Hospice opened the doors Wednesday to its new 16-bed care center on Clinton Avenue.

The facility will serve terminally ill patients who have just a short time to live, typically less than a week.

"The people over here really for the most part need round-the-clock, very specialized care," said Jane Birkhold, community relations coordinator. "We're here to administer that."

The spacious rooms have televisions and DVD players, and pull-out sofas to accommodate family members. All but one of them has a private patio.

The common area has a living room, playroom for children and stocked kitchen.

In addition to the new care center, the 10-acre Clinton Avenue campus has an eight-bed house for longer-term patients that opened in 2000 and an office for staff and volunteers.

More volunteers are always needed, Birkhold said. For more information, call toll-free 1-800-486-8784.
