Wildcat scramble on hold

With Hurricane Wilma on the horizon, this weekend's double dose of high school tournaments, set to take place at Quail Hollow Golf and Country Club in Wesley Chapel, is looking to end up in a split-decision.

Saturday's Second Annual Wildcat Golf Scramble is, at the moment, on hold. The scramble, benefitting the high school's baseball program, has encountered the latest in the year's long line of hurricanes. Aside from the weather, the tournament was ready to go, according to Quail Hollow's Bill Robinson.

"It was a small tournament, but it is new," said Robinson. "Right now it's wait-and-see."

For $60, participants get 18 holes of golf, cart and a post-round dinner. The tournament also features door prizes, as well as longest drive, closest-to-the-pin, and putting contests. If the weather cooperates, a shotgun start is set for 2 p.m.

Regardless of Saturday's weather, it appears Sunday's tournament will take place.

Strategically placed to fall on the Buccaneers' bye week, Chamberlain High School's four-man scramble benefits the baseball and softball programs. Despite working together for 10 years, it is the first annual tournament for baseball coach Dick Rohrberg and softball coach Bob Diaz.

The cost is $60 per golfer and includes "typical golf tournament stuff," according to Rohrberg. "We'll have dinner afterwards, raffles, a closest-to-the-pin, a longest drive, etc." Prizes include a DVD player, gift certificates, and 10 cases of Yuengling Brewery beer. A shotgun start is scheduled for 1 p.m.

For more information, contact Erik Shafer at (813) 245-5739 or Dick Rohrberg at (813) 975-7677, ext. 255.

BENEFIT RESULTS: Silverado Golf and Country Club, formerly Silver Oaks, held a "Golf Aid" benefit Oct. 8 in support of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita victims. All proceeds from Silverado's daily greens fees were donated to the American Red Cross. More than 100 golfers, staff, and volunteers participated, with $2,289.97 raised.

Also, the recent Land O' Lakes Golf Tournament in support of the football and basketball programs was held at Plantation Palms. According to both parties, a record 141 golfers helped raise more than $5,000.
