County selects utilities director as new assistant public works chief

County officials have selected director of utilities Bruce Bates to be the new assistant director of public works.

Bates has been working for the county for five months and has 20 years of experience dealing with public sector water and wastewater issues, Public Works Director Glenn McCracken said Thursday. "That is an important part of the growth of Citrus County as we go forward, and I think he'll be an asset to the office here," he said. The Public Works Department has more than 200 employees who handle tasks including engineering, maintenance operations, road construction, road maintenance and solid waste management. In August, former director Ken Frink left the department to work in the private sector, and the assistant director, Tom Dick, was promoted to assistant county administrator.
