IOWA CITY, Iowa - On a day that wound up with the top six Big Ten teams within one game of each other in the conference standings, Iowa's number - and its 22-game home winning streak - was up.
Michigan defeated the Hawkeyes 23-20 Saturday in the first overtime game in the history of 75-year-old Kinnick Stadium.
Reserve tailback Jerome Jackson scored the winning touchdown from a yard out. The junior was the third tailback the Wolverines used after starter Mike Hart injured his ankle in the first quarter.
In overtime, Iowa had the ball first and drove to the 10-yard line before settling for Kyle Schlicher's 28-yard field goal. Michigan's second play of overtime was an 18-yard pass from Chad Henne to Jason Avant, who made a great catch. Three Jackson runs later, the Wolverines had their season-best second straight victory.
"We needed to win," said Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who received a game ball for his 100th career victory. "We've had some ups and downs, but I think we did the things we needed to do."
No. 12 Penn State 63, Illinois 10
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Michael Robinson threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more - in the first half - as the Nittany Lions gave coach Joe Paterno his 350th victory.
The Penn State victory was so decisive that Robinson and most of his fellow starters did not play after the Nittany Lions built a 56-3 halftime lead to spoil Illinois' homecoming.
No. 14 Ohio State 41, Indiana 10
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Troy Smith ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, Ohio State had 240 yards rushing and another strong defensive effort led the Buckeyes to their most lopsided victory of the season.
Ohio State won a conference road game for only the second time in seven games dating to November 2003, while Indiana lost its 13th straight in the series and still hasn't beaten the Buckeyes at home since 1988.
No. 19 Wisconsin 31, Purdue 20
MADISON, Wis. - The Badgers' much-maligned defense picked up the slack for a surprisingly spotty offense and faulty special teams to deal the Boilermakers their fifth straight loss.
Safety Roderick Rogers returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown and cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu added two interceptions, including a game-sealing pickoff he returned 62 yards for a score with 3:21 left.
Northwestern 49, No. 22 Michigan State 14
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Brett Basanez threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores as the Wildcats won their third straight.
Michigan State scored on the game's first possession, going 75 yards in just three plays, the last an 18-yard touchdown pass from Drew Stanton to Kerry Reed. But the Spartans' own mistakes - two interceptions in the end zone, two missed field goals and a fumble that was returned for a score - allowed Northwestern to take a 21-7 halftime lead.
