Symposium touts mature workers

Florida employers could be in big trouble if they don't start thinking about recruiting and retaining older workers.

That's the message to be delivered today at a symposium on mature workers and coming changes to Florida's work force. Sponsors AARP Florida and Florida Trend magazine said Friday they were going ahead with the meeting despite the threat of Hurricane Wilma.

Aging baby boomers are at the crux of the demographic threat to Florida's economy. By 2012, more than 40 percent of Florida's work force will be 45 or older.

AARP said its recent study of more than 800 Florida businesses found only one employer in four is actively preparing to recruit and retain older workers, and most have done nothing. Other findings from the study will be released at the symposium.

Two of the key speakers have written books on the issue: David DeLong, author of Lost Knowledge: Confronting the Loss of an Aging Workforce, and Roger Herman, co-author of Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People.

Other speakers are scheduled to include Marion Sullivan, director of retail staffing for Home Depot, and Clayton Hollis Jr., vice president of public affairs for Publix Super Markets.

The symposium will be at the Renaissance Tampa International Plaza Hotel.
