  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Forward thinking

An entirely subjective look at the week ahead

MALE MODELS

On Tuesday, Details magazine's November issue hits stands with its list of "50 Most Powerful Men Under 39." They range from Def Jam CEO and rapper Jay-Z to Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman, from Monster Garage star Jesse James to 4-year-old "homewrecker" Maddox Jolie. No. 1 on the list: American soldiers killed in Iraq, average age 27.

WELCOME TO GROVERS MILL

Forget that headache-inducing movie version that served as Tom Cruise's engagement announcement. A better way to mark the 67th anniversary Sunday of Orson Welles' brilliantly scary radio classic War of the Worlds is American Stage's version, performed Tuesday through Sunday in St. Petersburg, using the original script. After all, monsters you imagine are always more frightening than those you can see. Go to americanstage.org or call (727) 823-7529.

BY THE BOOK

As Harriet Miers makes the rounds of an increasingly skittish flock of senators before her confirmation hearings begin maybe Nov. 7, you can hear about the woman whose spot on the Supreme Court she hopes to fill at the St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading on Saturday. Among the more than 50 authors appearing at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus is Joan Biskupic, whose new book is Sandra Day O'Connor: How the First Woman on the Supreme Court Became Its Most Influential Justice. Biskupic speaks at 11:15 a.m.; for information, go to www.festivalofreading.com

SWEETER THAN CANDY

Halloween is next Monday, but you could see some trick-or-treaters early, and you might want to keep a bowl of change next to the candy. Some of those costumed cuties could be collecting for UNICEF, and with that organization providing relief to kids whose lives have been devastated by such catastrophes as Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Pakistan, every penny counts. For information on how kids can participate, go to www.unicefusa.org

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO . . .

Three women who have succeeded in the same careers as their husbands or partners celebrate birthdays this week. U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton turns 58 Wednesday. Actor Ruby Dee, widow of the late, great Ossie Davis, will be 81 Thursday. And rock singer Grace Slick, whose partners included fellow musicians Paul Kantner and Spencer Dryden, will be 66 on Sunday.
