TAMPA - A 5-year-old Zephyrhills girl is recovering from a head injury at Tampa General Hospital after a Sunday afternoon crash in southeast Hillsborough that involved a stolen pickup truck, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Michael Todd Davis, driver of the stolen pickup truck that hit the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire carrying the little girl, is being held without bail in the county jail. Davis, 22, of 2920 Bruton Road in Plant City faces multiple charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving injury.

Investigators say the crash happened at 4:58 p.m. Katherine Jones, 48, was driving aPontiac Sunfire south on McIntosh Road, with her daughter Sarah Jones sitting on the passenger's side of the car. Jones stopped for a stop sign at the corner of McIntosh and Knights Griffin Road, then proceeded through the intersection.

That's when Davis, heading east on Knights Griffin Road with 24-year-old passenger Charles Lane, came along and hit the passenger's side of the Pontiac, according to a sheriff's report. Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said Davis slammed on his brakes and skidded at least 100 feet before hitting the Pontiac.

Davis got out of the 1997 Toyota pickup truck and ran off, but deputies arrested him a short time later, Carter said.

Lane and Davis were not injured. Sarah Jones was taken by helicopter to TGH, where she was listed in critical condition Sunday night. By Monday, her condition had improved to fair, according to hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fiss.

Davis is charged with reckless driving that led to serious injury, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, driving without a proper license, and grand theft of a motor vehicle, jail records show.

The arrest also violated the terms of Davis' probation for previous cases of drug possession, according to jail records.
