Focus lost

CameraToss.BlogSpot.com/

The sport of digital camera tossing is well-documented. That's because the whole idea of throwing your expensive digital camera in the air is to try to catch a visual miracle. Perusing this labor of love shows that the really sexy snaps are taken at night with a fairly long exposure. But who am I to judge such a thing? You'll have to see for yourself to get the full visual spectrum of what these brave, artistic souls are doing with their photo equipment.

Better than string

www.RememberTheMilk.com/

This nifty site might be my newest favorite, at least until something niftier comesalong. It's a to-do list manager that is better than any other you've used. It will remind you via e-mail, send text messages to your phone and help you boss around what you laughingly refer to as free time.

Influencing youth

This essay suggests that plonking kids in front of computers for hours on end isn't exactly doing them a great deal of good. The health implications are obvious. But what we might not consider are the acts of socialization, diminished sensory perception and lacking a necessary sense of belonging. This is well written and certainly thought provoking.

Bugs on parade

www.FloridaNature.org/

If you're not a Florida native, you're usually in for a shock when you discover the vast array of creepy crawling things in the state. This gem of a site is Spartan, but the content shines. As the address suggests, it focuses entirely on the vast array of local animals and plants. While the grasshoppers are merely disturbing, the various flies scare the willies out of me.

Nerdy but nifty

and

www.TheElderGeek.com/registry_edits.htm

Into every life a little tech must fall. The first link is a $20 program for semiadvanced Mac OS X types. It's a great utility for backups, testing potentially buggy software, or even checking that Apple-issued operating system updates are well behaved. The second link is a must-have for Windows tweakers. It will show you tricks such as changing IE's title bar, changing the word Start in the Start menu, and disabling the auto-run function when you pop a CD in your drive. These do require delving into the fabled Windows Registry, which should frighten the faint of heart.
