Parents can learn how to help kids with FCAT

SPRING HILL - Fox Chapel Middle School will host an FCAT Explorer for Reading parent workshop at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in the school media center, 9412 Fox Chapel Lane.
The workshop will preview the middle school reading portion of the FCAT Explorer Web site. Parents will learn how to navigate the site and how to help their children use the site. A light dinner and child care will be provided.

Events help raise funds for Alzheimer's organization
The Alzheimer's Family Organization has scheduled the following fundraisers and programs:
--Charity golf tournament, Saturday, at Meadow Oaks Golf and Country Club, 13125 Fairwinds Road, Hudson. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. This is a four-person scramble. Tickets are $65, which includes a continental breakfast, golf, lunch provided by Pit Boss Bar-B-Que, golfer's shirt, trifold towel, a hat and a goody bag. Prizes will be awarded for the top three teams, longest drive, closest to the pin and a hole-in-one. There will be raffles and a putting contest.
--Charity luncheon fashion show and art show, noon Nov. 14, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Kontos Community Center, 9426 Little Road, New Port Richey. Fashions will be presented by Christian's Boutique in New Port Richey. A catered lunch will be provided by Brew City. There will be door prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $20.
--Free memory screenings will be provided from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 in Spring Hill, by appointment only. The free screenings are part of National Memory Screening Day to promote early detection of Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses.
--Support group leader orientation, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 18, at Jennifer Gardens, 7334 Jennifer St., Port Richey. The purpose of the meeting is to instruct individuals in the operation of a support group. Those who complete the program will be eligible to affiliate their group with the Alzheimer's Family Organization. The training is free. Registration is required.
The Alzheimer's Family Organization is a nonprofit group that provides services to Hernando, Citrus, Pasco, Sumter, Lake, northern Pinellas and northern Hillsborough counties. Computer, CPR, more classes offered at PHCC
Pasco-Hernando Community College will offer the following noncredit classes at the PHCC Spring Hill Center, 11245 Spring Hill Drive:
--Basic Computer, Internet and Windows, 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, Oct. 31-Nov. 23.
--CPR, 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and 8 (a second class will be offered Nov. 22 and 29).
--AIDS Seminar, 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 15.
--Driver Improvement/New Driver, 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 17.
The following classes will be offered at the PHCC North Campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Brooksville:
--Computer Basics II, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 27-Nov. 8.
--Microsoft Office Professional/Intro, 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 10-Dec. 1.

Groups can educate public at Belk charity event
SPRING HILL - Belk Department Store, 13151 Cortez Blvd., will have its annual Charity Day on Friday and Saturday at the store.
Participants can raise money for nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations by selling tickets for $5 each. Each individual who purchases a ticket will receive a 20 percent off shopping pass good for the two-day event.
All nonprofit organizations can take advantage of the sale to educate customers about their group. Bake sales outside the store are welcome.
Participating organizations will raise $5 from each ticket sold before Friday. All ticket money collected in-store both days will be split evenly among the participating organizations. One representative from each organization will be asked to assist during the two-day Charity Day sale.

Marine detachment hosts Octoberfest food, games
BROOKSVILLE - Marine Corps League Detachment 708 will have its Octoberfest from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at 8405 Sunshine Grove Road.
Tickets are $10, which includes food and beer. There will be target shooting, darts and horseshoe games. Music will be provided by Ricky G.

Scuba certification classes begin Nov. 1
SPRING HILL - Scuba lessons will begin Nov. 1 at the Hernando County Family YMCA, 1300 Mariner Blvd. Classes will be from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, consisting of six class and pool sessions.
The lessons are open to anyone age 12 and older in good physical health and comfortable in and under water. Those who complete the course will be certified as Open Water I divers, a designation that is recognized worldwide.
The cost is $150, which includes use of scuba equipment and four checkout dives in the Gulf of Mexico. Personal equipment, masks, fins and snorkels are not included. The instructor will be Jack Farrell.

Series of flea markets, festivals are announced
The following flea markets, bazaars and festivals are planned:
