Get spooked at 'Field of Screams'

SEMINOLE - Goblins, witches, ghosts and ghouls will gather for a "Field of Screams" at 5:30 p.m Friday. The annual Seminole community Halloween event will be at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St., ending at 8:30 p.m.

The event features a "Spook Zone" including bounce houses and carnival games, a haunted trail, costume contest, freaky short movies, a family photo area, and free Halloween candy. Food and beverages will be available. Admission for the spook zone and haunted trail is $5. For more information, call 391-8345.

The third annual Doggy Derby, sponsored by Seminole aquatic at Seminole Recreation Complex, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Tickets, $5 per dog with no charge for owners, must be purchased in advance and require proof of rabies vaccination. The event marks the last day of the pool season. The Seminole Recreation Complex will sponsor a trip to Solomon's Castle in Ona on Thursday. The trip, which will include lunch at Boat in the Moat, leaves at 9 a.m. and returns by 4 p.m. Solomon's Castle was created by Howard Solomon, an international sculptor and artist, out of collected and recycled items.

The Boat in the Moat is a replica of a 16th century Spanish galleon. The trip costs $42 per person and includes the bus trip, entrance fee and lunch. A recreation card is required to participate.

Other upcoming recreation center activities include:

The annual Table Tennis Tournament on Nov. 1, open to senior players 50 and older. Cost is $2 to enter the double-elimination tournament. A recreation card is required. Signup sheets are available at the office and game room. Trophies will be given to the top three winners.

A trip to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Nov. 10. Cost is $16 per person and a recreation card is required. The group will stop for lunch at a Tampa restaurant.

Thanksgiving luncheon, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 15. Cost is $7 per person and reservations must be made before Nov. 12. The meal will include turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, rolls, two kinds of pies and ice cream.

The Maple Syrup Serenaders from Connecticut will provide entertainment after lunch, followed by an afternoon matinee showing of The Emperor's New Clothes. No recreation card is needed to join in. Attendees are asked to bring canned goods for hurricane relief efforts.

A special free community program, "Alzheimer's Disease: What Family Caregivers Need to Know," will be presented by the University of South Florida Suncoast Alzheimer's and Gerontology Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Freedom Square, 7800 Liberty Lane. The program for individuals caring for a family member or a friend with Alzheimer's disease includes practical tips, resources and caregiver information.

Discussion topics include understanding the disease process, diagnosis and treatment, legal and financial planning, managing troublesome behaviors, communicating with a person with Alzheimer's, coping strategies and more. The annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Seminole will be held Nov. 5 and 6 at the Vo-Ed Center, at 86th Avenue and 126th Street. Activities will include a Haunted Fear Factory for kids, antique tractor show, expanded business participation under the big top, a large car show, entertainment, an area for crafters, 4H activities and fire department demonstrations. The traditional roasted pig will be joined by an old-fashioned turkey roast. For the first time, the festival will include a White Elephant Flea Market. A bloodmobile will be on site for the two-day event. The festival opens at 10 a.m. each day, closing at 7 p.m. on Saturday and at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission and parking are free. Seminole residents interested in serving on the Pinellas Trail Board, one of its committees, or helping out at any of its events are invited to attend a work meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at the new Largo Library, 120 Central Park Drive, Largo.

Entries for a special nighttime holiday parade Nov. 20 are being accepted at the Seminole Chamber office, 8400 113th St. N. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Holland G. Mangum Seminole Recreation Complex and end at Seminole Mall, where Santa Claus will greet the public.

Blessed Sacrament Church will hold a homemade Italian dinner from 5 to 8 p.m., Nov. 4 at the parish center, to raise funds for various projects. The meal will include an authentic sauce cooked by a church member. The event will include a raffle of Italian-themed items from various grades.
