  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Now is the best time to stop land pirates

Letters to the Editor
Published October 27, 2005

Do you want every grove pushed aside for houses? Do you want to see every pine tree and oak tree gone? Hernando County covered with wall-to-wall houses? Our precious water diverted to developers' golf courses and pools?

If they don't bring their own water, keep them out now! We don't need these land pirates.

Do commissioners ask incoming industries how much water they are going to use? I never heard one ask that very important question.

If we don't stop these pirates now, we all are going to have to purchase bottled water.

They are bulldozing all our natural protections from storms, wind and freeze. No more hammock land and precious trees. It's sad.

Bang their ears.

Teenager doesn't deserve 30-years

This regards the boy William Thornton. And, yes, I did say boy. I am a 27-year-old female and I can tell you this boy does not deserve 30 years in prison for something like this. Yes, he deserves some form of punishment, but I think what he did is going to torment him badly enough.

How can any right judge take 30 years of this boy's life away from him and then, when he gets out, expect him to just join all the other citizens and earn his part in this world? It's just inhumane. Our society is so messed up!

I just read in the newspaper about the 94-year-old man who was driving with a dead body hanging out his window. He's going to get off on that! How can they allow someone who does that to just be let go? And then this boy who hit people who were drunk gets 30 years? Where's the justice?

Let's get real. Waste our tax dollars on someone who is a real threat, like these sex freaks out there who kill little girls and bury them in the ground alive. Now that deserves 30 years.

This is just a thought from a concerned citizen who actually cares about teenagers today.
