Tourney to benefit Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is a progressive brain disorder that destroys a person's memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate, and carry out daily activities.
According to the Alzheimer's Association, an estimated 4.5-million Americans live with the disorder, more than double the total of a quarter-century ago. The Association notes that 10 percent of those over the age of 65, as well as nearly 50 percent of those 85 and older, have some form of Alzheimer's.
Another statistic: The majority of funding for organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association comes from the public. One way to help is by participating in, or donating to, this weekend's 5th Annual Alzheimer's Scramble, benefiting the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Family Organization. The event, which switches locations year to year, is to be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Meadow Oaks Golf and Country Club, located at 13125 Fairwinds Road in Hudson.
Registration is for the best-ball, four-person scramble is at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:15.
For $65 per person, golfers will receive 18 holes of golf, a continental breakfast, lunch provided by Pit Boss Bar-B-Que, a polo golf shirt featuring the event, an event hat, a tri-fold golf towel with the event, and a sleeve of Top-Flite golf balls.
"Last year, we were delayed a month because the hurricanes, and it still turned out to be their biggest event of the year, if not ever," Irene Thompson said. Thompson is a member of an organizational committee which features A.F.O. employees and volunteers such as herself. Thompson and Bob Tiller, also a committee member, are co-founders of Full Circle Financial, an event sponsor.
"Of all the tournaments I've been to, I don't think I've ever attended an event quite like this," Tiller added. "An hour-and-a-half after the event is over, people are still hanging around, because, in addition to being for a great cause, it's also a lot of fun. It's just marvelous."
Thompson said that typical golf prizes will be awarded, including a hole-in-one contest with a new Cadillac as the prize, along with closest-to-the-pin and longest drive. A raffle will also be held, with a prize valued at over 1,500.
For $5 a ticket, or five for $20, participants will have the chance to win a $200 gift certificate to "The Golf Place," four personalized golf lessons from the golf professional at Meadow Oaks, a round for four at Innsbrook, Cheval, The Links, and Crescent Hill. For the ladies, a perfume gift basket and a manicure/pedicure will also be included.
