  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Hot ticket: Bogus Pomp plus Frank Zappa = Zappaween

By Times Staff
Published October 27, 2005

Zappaween has become a Halloween tradition for Bogus Pomp, the Frank Zappa cover band led by guitarist Jerry Outlaw, above, and this year's performance is the 10th. "Technically, it's our 11th anniversary, but we missed Zappaween last year," Outlaw said. "It's the band that wouldn't die." The 10-piece band is fresh from a milestone appearance in August at the Zappanale Festival in Bad Doberan, Germany, which draws Zappa enthusiasts from around the world. Bogus Pomp plans to return next summer to play at the festival and at a ceremony renaming a Berlin street after Zappa.

The play list for Zappaween 10 includes Holiday in Berlin, Little House I Used To Live In, Black Napkins, The Torture Never Stops Zappa's Halloween theme song and others. The music starts about 9:15 p.m. Saturday at Bourbon Street, 4331 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. $15. (727) 843-0686; www.boguspomp.com
