Help the Children's Dream Fund with discount cards

TAMPA - Discount cards are on sale for the annual shopping spree Nov. 4-13 to benefit the Children's Dream Fund.

With the purchase of a $50 card, patrons will receive a 20 percent discount at more than 160 retailers and restaurants in the Tampa Bay area, including Old Hyde Park Village and WestShore Plaza.

The cards are available at several local stores such as Inkwood Books, Sydney Buchanan jewelry, Strasburg Children and Georgette's. For a complete list of locations and participating merchants, call the Children's Dream Fund at (727) 896-6390.

Travel, adventure writer to give reading at UT

DOWNTOWN - University of Tampa's Writers at the University series hosts a reading by travel and adventure writer Tom Miller at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Reeves Theater at UT's Vaughn Center, 401 W Kennedy Blvd.

Miller has written extensively about the southwestern United States and Latin America.

His writing has appeared in Smithsonian, the New Yorker, the New York Times, Life and Natural History. His books include The Panama Hat Trail, Trading with the Enemy and Jack Ruby's Kitchen Sink, which won the Lowell Thomas Award for Best Travel Book of 2001.

Help clean up Tampa's waterways on Nov. 19

TAMPA - Sign up now for the 18th annual Hillsborough River and Waterways Cleanup.

The Mayor's Beautification Program is seeking volunteers 14 and older to help clean and restore shoreline sites along the Hillsborough River and Tampa's waterways.

The event starts at 8 a.m. Nov. 19 at the Lowry Park boat ramp, 7525 N Boulevard. Volunteers will receive cleanup bags, gloves, a T-shirt, and complimentary breakfast and lunch. A free Rollin' on the River Festival will follow.

Listen to blues and help paralyzed vets at concert

TAMPA - The Florida Gulf Coast chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America hosts its annual benefit concert from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road.

The night will feature the Tampa Bay Women's Blues Review and a color guard presentation by the Marine Corps. Keynote speaker will be Col. Donald J. Halpin, vice commander of MacDill Air Force Base.

Cost is $7 in advance or $10 at the door. Proceeds benefit the local Paralyzed Veterans of America chapter. Call 935-6540 to reserve tickets.

Dance, listen to poetry and metaphors Saturday

ST. PETERSBURG - Asher Dance Eclectic will perform a series of dance pieces with poetry, music and metaphors at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Studio @ 620, 620 First Ave. S in St. Petersburg.

Cost is $10, $5 for students and seniors, free for members.
