BAYSHORE GARDENS - A 297-foot condo tower may soon rise in the shadow of Bayshore Boulevard and the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway.
The Bayshore Gardens Neighborhood Association voted Tuesday night to support Southeast Capital Partners' bid to remake a parking lot at 2907 W Bay to Bay Blvd. into a luxury condo tower. Developers had asked residents to choose between the condo tower, which would have 26 stories and 84 residential units, and an eight-story office building.
Residents cast more than 40 votes in favor of the condo project, association president Vicki Pollyea said.
"It was a decisive decision," Pollyea said. "Only two people voted for the office complex."
Pollyea said the additional traffic produced by the office building likely persuaded voters to side with the residential developer.
Although the project has cleared its first hurdle, construction is not a sure thing. City land use officials and representatives at the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission object to the project. Southeast Capital Partners plans to ask the City Council to rezone the property for residential use at its Jan. 26 meeting.
