Plan your plants' mealtimes

Take the guesswork out of when to fertilize with these tips from horticulturist Bob Albanese at the Florida Botanical Garden in Largo:

- Most plants and grasses in the Tampa Bay area should be fertilized up to three times a year. Mark these feeding times on your calendar: late February or early March; late May or early June; and late August or early September.

- You can feed your soil any time of year with mulch, compost and other soil amendments. In fact, you may be able to skip fertilizers altogether if you're regularly mulching and adding organic matter to the soil.

- Now is a good time to feed vegetable gardens and annuals, which thrive in cooler temperatures.

Give your other plants a break for now. They're ready to enjoy several months of rest after the long, hot summer.
