Ward hired as Rockets assistant

HOUSTON - The Rockets hired Charlie Ward, a former FSU football standout who played 11 NBA seasons, as an assistant coach Friday.
Drafted by New York in the first round of the 1994 draft, Ward spent his first 91/2 seasons with the Knicks. Ward ranks third on the Knicks' all-time 3-point list (598) and fifth in steals (744).
Ward also played with San Antonio and Houston.
BLAZERS: Starting point guard Sebastian Telfair missed Friday's loss at Seattle. He remained in the Portland area, where doctors were inducing labor with his girlfriend, the mother of Telfair's first child.
BUCKS: Milwaukee exercised a one-year option on guard T.J. Ford, keeping him through the 2006-07 season. He missed last season after cervical spine surgery.
CLIPPERS: Forward Rodney White, who signed as a free agent Oct. 5, was waived. The ninth overall pick in 2001 by the Pistons averaged 8.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in the preseason.
MAVERICKS: Center Pavel Podkolzin could miss up to four months after he has surgery next week for a stress fracture in his right foot.
NUGGETS: Denver exercised a fourth-year option on forward Carmelo Anthony, keeping him under contract through the 2006-07 season.
RODMAN IN ABA: Dennis Rodman, 44, who last played in the NBA in 2000, signed with the ABA Tijuana Dragons. His agent said because of Rodman's travel schedule he will be limited to about 10 games, starting Nov. 24.
Preseason games
NETS 91, KNICKS 86: New Jersey point guard Jason Kidd (left quadriceps) and forward-center Jason Collins (right knee) did not play. They are expected back for the regular-season opener. Stephon Marbury shot 1-for-8 for host New York.
HAWKS 104, HORNETS 90: Rookie Marvin Williams had 11 points and 13 rebounds for Atlanta, whose leading scorer Al Harrington was out due to illness. New Orleans waived George Lynch.
WIZARDS 85, PACERS 77: Washington's Gilbert Arenas overcame 2-for-10 shooting in the first half to hit 4-of-5 in the third quarter and finished with 16 points.
