'Terrorists' remark insulted property owners

Letters to the Editor
Published October 30, 2005

I was insulted for all property owners in Branchton when I read what Commissioner (Ronda) Storms said. (During a discussion about property owners asking high prices for their land: "I'm with Ronald Reagan - you don't negotiate with terrorists.")

Her analogy might also apply to the millions and millions of dollars the (terrorist) county charges homeowners for property taxes every year with the threat of taking property away if the taxes are not paid. Some of these homeowners have lived in low income status all of their lives and the sale of their property is the only thing that they have to retire on.

The county will experience another windfall year of tax collection mostly due to the escalating property values and high dollar amounts paid for new and existing homes and properties. A lot that is a small fraction of an acre in a subdivision in this area can sell for well over $200,000 and the county is happy to collect the taxes on that lot.

So Commissioner Storms needs to belly up to the bar and realize that yes, the county, too, has to pay high prices for land and not insult property owners by calling them terrorists.
