FLORAL CITY - Floral City Elementary School has a new flag. Provided by Hooper Funeral Home, the flag belonged to a veteran who, when he died, left it to his relatives to donate as they wished.
In a ceremony to present the flag and to teach the students proper handling, three Navy Seabee Veterans of America and their wives (Honeybees) recently visited the school. During an assembly, the veterans - Cmdr. George Staples, John Lowe and Lynford Roya - demonstrated how a flag is folded and explained what each fold symbolizes.
Later the group went outdoors, where the old flag was retired and the new one raised by fifth-grade safety patrol members. "They raise the flag every morning and lower it every afternoon," said Patty Graber, a teacher's assistant who cosponsors the safety patrol with teacher Heather Bishop. "That's their job, to fold the flag."
Staples took the retired flag for an honorable disposal. He is available to help community members who have torn or faded flags that need to be disposed of. He can be reached at 628-6927.
