CRYSTAL RIVER - Three or four times a year, the Crystal River Kiwanis Club provides books to Crystal River Primary School prekindergarten children through its Reading Is Fundamental program. During a recent book giveaway, children could choose one book apiece from a table in Sharon Finley's classroom.

The children were visited by two Kiwanis members: Dr. Cheryl McFarland and Gerry Peterson. McFarland read the children a story before offering the books, which were theirs to keep.

The Kiwanis motto is "Helping to better the world one child at a time," McFarland said. "So it (the reading program) gets children interested in reading while they're young."

The Crystal River club supplies books to Crystal River Primary, Rock Crusher Elementary School and the Head Start program. "The children really enjoy getting those books," Finley said.
